Teatro Balboa located in the municipality of Mayagüez, Puerto Rico, and has a total of 5,097 S.F
The Balboa Theater is located in the corner between the Mendez Vigo Street and the Liceo Street. The amount of remodeling's that the building has undergone are unknown due to lack of recorded information, but we are still able to determine which architectural elements have been added after its construction because of few original images as well as the common use of materials during the 1920’s. Some examples include an added gallery to the original façade, an interior skin to cover the windows in order for it to work as a cinema, and the location of the projection room. This façade added elements where removed in our design in order to restore the original look. We added a ticket booth, as well as roofing, to the entrance with a modern look in order to create a contrast between the new and the old.
The interior of the building had to be treated in a completely different way. Due to the complete deterioration of the interior of the building materials, and finishes, everything had to be stripped down to its original structure. The original finishes where not known due to the many remodelings the building had undergone, consequently we decided to treat the interior with a modern finish that followed our current building codes. This buildings serves the purpose of being a cinema, one which was not its original function, consequently we decided to leave the windows, but they will be permanently closed to avoid any sun and to keep the AC from leaving.
A modified mezzanine level had to be added in order to equip the theater with cinema capabilities. In this mezzanine we can find two extra rows of seating, as well as the cinema equipment and a private gathering space.
